Changing Jarrow

A nostalgic tour of Jarrow illustrated by old photographs of the town, selected from the author's unique and extensive collection. The images, many of which have never been published before, feature street scenes, notable buildings, social history, industry, events and transport. Jarrow was renowned as a town built on shipbuilding and steel working, courtesy of the Palmer shipbuilding empire who reigned supreme supplying the world's fleet with more than 1,000 vessels until its demise in 1933. It was this abrupt closure of the world famous shipyard that instigated the infamous Jarrow Crusade. The fascinating eight picture postcards that were given to Paul Perry in 1966 were the beginning of a journey that has lasted close to fifty years. The postcards were to form the backbone of the author's extensive collection and have multiplied into many thousands of images, some of which the author shares with you within the pages of Changing Jarrow.

From Jarrow's Tower

From Jarrow’s Tower traces the history of St Bede’s RC Church in Jarrow over the last century and a half. Featuring lots of rare and previously unpublished photographs, the book tracies the roots of Jarrow from monastic times and the religious community founded by Benedict Biscop in the seventh century. The book also takes a fresh look at the life of Jarrow saint and scholar the Venerable Bede and investigates the town’s industrial roots, including an account of Springwell Paper Mill, captured in an evocative early photograph.

Jarrow Then & Now

For many years Jarrow was renowned for shipbuilding and heavy engineering. Today the town has changed considerably. No longer do we build ships and the once-bustling yards are now silent. But the town continues to thrive, changing daily right before our eyes. This book is an intriguing insight into how these changes have occurred, through captivating images and informative captions. This book is a must for anyone who is connected to the town of Jarrow, however remote that connection may be.

Curiosities of County Durham

Of all the counties, Durham is perhaps the most surprising. Its heavily populated cities and towns give way to apparently deserted expanses of moorland, romantic clifftop vistas and wooded ravines and in the midst of this bewildering diversity are objects of great architectural and historical merit. Yet amongst these more well known features are a host of lesser known, more obscure and unusual objects which are waiting to be discovered. Curiosities of County Durham is enthusiastically devoted to identifying these lesser known features. As far as possible its intention is to provide the reader with accurate site references and approximate mileages to the locations, which begin at Durham City and then circulate outwards around the county. This enchanting book features a full range of interesting curiosities; all of which have their own particular charm and significance which should be preserved to interest and delight visitors to the area as well as locals.
